This song was inspired from buying a Baritone Ukulele. It seemed to fit the mood well (as opposed to using a guitar, for example) and added a certain intimacy that this song required.
This one came fresh off of my parents divorce and is a sad snapshot of my mindset at the time. Most advice was to keep that stiff upper lip well firm and high - just like my father. However, I'm not really that kind of person and neither is he. He just hides it better. These are revelations that only time can reveal and as our relationship has grown over the years I know the deep emotional toll these events took on him - we all just wish he had been able to open up a lot sooner. It certainly inspired me to be far more candid with my emotions. Every day you get a little bit stronger...
lyrics
Everybody says I've got to be like my father
Who wore his heart up his sleeve
Held there by a thin seam
Why does he leave?
What does he see?
How does he feel?
Does it match my own pain?
If I didn't act so kind
If I could get it off of my mind
I wish it wasn't so hard to tell you
I wish it got a little bit easier
But every day I get a little bit stronger
Everybody says I've got to be like my father
Who wore his heart up his sleeve
Held there by a thin seam
Why does he leave?
What does he see?
How does he feel?
Does it match my own pain?
