This song was me attempting to deal with the idea of relative truth - is what I "know" the truth? And if I find out that my truth is false then how can I ever be sure that I "know" anything? I tried to frame it with choices that we all make throughout our lives and how it can lead us to believing in nothing... but it might come off a little strange.
In terms of it's composition, I think this is a classic case of me hearing a song and wanting to make a song that made me feel the same way - in this case "Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen.
But, as it always seems to happen, it came out completely different. The elements are there - the strings (pads) and the looped drums (or seemingly looped drums) just plowing along. Mine came out more hard hitting - the strings are sharper, the drums are heavier, and the vocal is not as passive and helpless as the song that inspired it. Funny how that works!
lyrics
Does the line on the horizon make you pick a side?
Does the columnist in the paper unite or does he divide?
Will we listen to suggestions before we make a choice?
Does the average person really have a voice?
Do you believe in nothing?
Do you trust what you know?
Can we trust what we think we see?
Can we trust what we think we know?
Do you believe in nothing?
Are ideals you share aloud the same you keep in your head?
Are the actions you show the world the same you hold in your heart?
Are the memories that you have the ones you want to keep?
Are the bridges that you burn the ones you really need?
Is the bottle that you reach for designed to clear your head?
Or is it only to stop you from wishing that you were dead?
Are you going to spend your whole life down and out in that town?
Are you going to take a chance or will you never live it down?
Do you believe in nothing?
Do you trust what you know?
Can we trust what we think we see?
Can we trust what we think we know?
Do you believe in nothing?
Or do you believe in something?
Can you sleep sound at night?
Does it anger you to wonder about decisions you've made in your life?
Does the thought of God haunt you?
Does it make you feel left out?
Does he really care about us?
One day we'll all find out
