This one is about a guy who has a panic attack when he's with a group of his friends. He leaves their company and heads to the bridge at the heart of the city. All these questions of what this life means and what his purpose is just throw him for a loop. He intends to jump. As he gets ready for the plunge a light shines in his eyes and knocks him backwards back to the safety of the sidewalk on the bridge. He tells himself that God has spoken - that he was given a sign. However, in reality, it was the headlights of a random car crossing the bridge.
One of the first times where I thought that I could translate a short story into a song. This kickstarted a period when I would actually write out these stories first before ever even considering turning them into songs.
The recording of this is pretty haphazard - there's a lot of varying parts with different tempos and so on. And the drums - my god they're all over the place! At this point I was attemping to use Abbey Road 60's Drums - playing them on a midi controller. Not a great move! Quantize? Never! But in retrospect, yes I should have quantized the hell out of this one. I think it has great promise as a little "mini-suite" ala McCartney but it would require a complete re-recording.
lyrics
I felt fine last night, I was out with you
I felt fine last night, I would do anything I was asked to
But then the questions filled my mind
How did I get here? Now what do I do?
What happens when we die?
The answers were questions too
I'd seen the bridge a thousand time in the past
We left our plates and headed out the back
They told me to meet them at the show
But the questions just wouldn't let go
And I skipped out
What happens to us when we die?
Do we take our names? Do we take our pride?
Who will remember me when I'm gone?
The pain and fear hit me way too strong
If there's nothing to live for but life itself
Then why do I matter to anyone else?
My dreams were shattered, oh where do I start?
In those hours I felt the longing in my heart
With the bridge in sight
I thought "I'll jump tonight"
But my sight was overtaken
By a light so bright that I was shaken
I fell to the pavement, my head spun so fast
The light was a car that had just passed
