I liked this song for a long time and considered it for addition to the "Never Felt Like Travelling the World" album - despite the recording quality being a little worse than the songs that ended up on that release, especially drum-wise - but something held it back. I think, despite this being a true moment in my life, it actually feels made up to me.
It's pretty cheesy. I distinctly remember cringing at some of the lyrics in the bridge but my wonderful friend and roommate at the time, Ryan Khan, pushed me to keep them saying that they were charming. I think it was a good idea even to this day but it still feels awkward. Perhaps this is a good example of me not being as fearless as I'd like to be.
Sadly, the lyrics still ring true. I've yet to see her again over a decade later. She was a wonderful friend and a beautiful spirit. Hopefully she's winning whatever battles have come since our last meeting.
lyrics
I met an old friend of mine last night
She was in a rush but we talked anyway
There’s one thing I remember, something she said
And she said it so passionately
She said “Take what you learn and take what you need
But don’t worry about me, you know it’s too late for me
And it feels like we’re the only two people on this earth who understand”
It was early in the morning
She missed her meeting but she didn’t mind
That’s when she said to me, “I split too soon and I couldn’t find any room
I don’t have a home and I feel so alone
And I don’t think I can make it on my own”
So I gave her a hug and said, “I’m not feeling so hot myself”
And she cried and cried and laughed
That’s when she turned to me, that’s when she said
“Take what you learn and take what you need
But don’t worry about me, you know it’s too late for me
And it feels like we’re the only two people on this earth who understand”
Then she left me
I haven’t seen her again since that night, all those years ago
But one thing’s for sure love is war
May she win
